What this tool does
PDF to Word turns your PDF into a Word document you can edit. Lines of a paragraph are joined into one flowing paragraph, so the text rewraps as you type. Headings become real Word headings, bold and italic text carries over, lists become lists where they are recognised, and pictures come along roughly where they were. Each PDF page starts a new page in Word. It keeps the content, not the exact look, so spacing and fonts may differ a little.
How to convert a PDF to Word
- Choose a PDF, or drop it onto the box above.
- Select Convert to Word. The bar shows each page as it is read.
- Download the .docx file.
- Open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and edit the text.
What happens to your file
We never upload your file. Your PDF is processed on your device: the text and pictures are read and the Word file is written inside this browser tab. The code that reads the PDF comes from this site, never from a third party, and your PDF is not sent to our servers or stored by us.
What it cannot do
- It cannot read scanned PDFs yet, because that needs text recognition (OCR), which is coming. If only some pages are scans, those pages come across as pictures and you are told which ones.
- Tables are the weak spot. A simple grid with ruled lines can become a Word table; anything else comes across as paragraphs.
- Pages with several columns become one column: the left column first, then the right.
- It cannot open a password-protected PDF. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you already have.
- Form fields come across as plain text: what was typed into them stays, but they are no longer fields you can fill in.
Frequently asked questions
Close, but not exactly. The text, headings, bold and italic, lists and pictures come across, and the text flows so you can edit it. Spacing, fonts and the position of things may differ a little, and pages with several columns become one column.
Not yet. A scan is a picture of text, and reading it needs text recognition (OCR), which is coming. If only some pages are scans, the rest convert as text and the scanned pages come across as pictures. A scan that already has a hidden text layer converts as text.
You get a standard Word .docx file, made to open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice. It was checked in Microsoft Word, and spacing can differ a little between apps.
No limit on how many files or pages, one file at a time, up to 200 MB. Very large files depend on how much memory your device has, so a phone may not manage one a laptop can. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark on the Word file.
No. We never upload your file. The conversion is processed on your device, inside this browser tab, and the Word file is made there too.
