What this tool does
Add page numbers writes a number on every page of a PDF, so a printed copy can be put back in order and a reader can point to "page 12". Choose the style, from a plain 1 to Page 1 of 9, which edge and corner it goes in, and how large it is. You can leave a cover page blank and start counting from any number. The rest of each page is left exactly as it was.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Choose a PDF, or drop it onto the box above.
- Pick a style, the edge and the alignment for the numbers.
- If the first page is a cover, choose to leave it blank, and change the starting number if you need to.
- Select Add page numbers, then download the file.
What happens to your file
We never upload your file. The numbers are added inside this browser tab, on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers or stored by us, and your original file is not changed.
What it cannot do
- It does not check what is already on the page. If a page has text right at the edge, the number can overlap it.
- Numbers are black, in a plain sans-serif font. Roman numerals and custom wording are not offered.
- It cannot remove or change numbers that are already printed on the pages.
- It cannot open a password-protected PDF. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you already have.
- The file can be up to 200 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Choose to skip the first page and numbering starts on the second page. The count in "1 of 9" style numbers then covers only the numbered pages.
Yes. Type the number the first numbered page should carry, for example 12 if this PDF continues an earlier document. Every page after it counts up from there.
Yes. Each number is placed by how the page looks when you open it, so on a landscape or rotated page it still sits at the edge you chose and reads the right way up.
Not with this tool. The numbers are written onto the pages like any other text. Keep your original file if you might want a different style later; it is not changed.
