Edit the text in a PDF

Change the existing text in a PDF free: click a line and retype: it keeps its size, colour and, where it has the letters, its font. We never upload your file.

What this tool does

It changes the words that are already in a PDF: a wrong date, a misspelt name, last year's price. Text you can edit shows a dashed outline when you point at it. Click it, retype it, and the new text takes the old text's place in the file with the same size, colour and position, and the same font where it has the letters you type (otherwise a close match). The old words are really gone, not hidden under a patch. It is free, with no limit on how many files or pages, no signup and no watermark.

How to edit the text in a PDF

  1. Choose the PDF, or drop it onto the box above. The editor opens with Edit text chosen.
  2. Wait a moment while the text editor gets ready, then point at the text you want to change.
  3. Click it and type the new words. Press Enter or click elsewhere to finish.
  4. Select Download to save the edited copy.

What happens to your file

We never upload your file. The PDF is opened and changed inside this browser tab, and the edited copy is made there too. We store nothing, and the original file is left as it was.

What it cannot do

  • Paragraphs don't reflow. Each line is edited on its own, so a longer line runs wider instead of pushing the rest down.
  • New text can be in Latin, Cyrillic or Greek letters. Arabic, Hebrew and Indic scripts can't be added, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts are not included.
  • Text that is part of a picture, as in a scanned page, can't be edited: it isn't text in the file.
  • There is no find and replace: each change is made where you click.
  • A digitally signed file loses its signature when edited. You are told before you download.
  • Whiteout covers but doesn't remove, unlike Edit text and Redact. Redaction doesn't touch the file's metadata, such as its title and author.
  • The file can be up to 200 MB.

To add new text, ticks or a signature as well, use Edit PDF: it is the same editor, with every tool.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The old words are taken out of the file and the new ones put in their place, keeping the size, colour and position, and the font wherever it has the letters you type. This is different from Whiteout, which only covers text: covered text is still in the file and can be copied out.

PDFs often carry only the letters they use. When your new text needs one that is missing, that line switches to a close-matching font of ours and a short note says so. You never get empty boxes in place of letters.

No. Each line is edited on its own and paragraphs do not reflow, so a longer line simply runs wider. Keep replacements close to the original length, or edit the next line too.

Not yet. New text can use Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters. Right-to-left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew, Indic scripts such as Hindi, and Chinese, Japanese and Korean are not supported in new text.
